A sheriff owns the outcome when something goes wrong in the jail, so the evaluation question is not what the technology can do in a demo, but whether it reduces real risk and real liability with the staff you actually have. This is a framework for judging that.
Cut through the pitch with three:
Most in-custody events become claims. The value of a safety layer is not only preventing harm but being able to show, honestly, what was surfaced and how staff responded. Technology that produces a reviewable record reduces the exposure that comes from unaccounted-for time.
Be skeptical of accuracy percentages, promises to prevent deaths, and claims of certification or compliance. Judge a system by what it does and the record it keeps, and require a person in the loop on every alert.
Start with an honest read of your own facility. The 60-Day Audit Readiness Checklist frames what an evaluation should look at.
