State jail oversight and inspection tracker

IN SHORT

There is no national jail standard and no national jail inspector. Who oversees county jails, whether standards are mandatory, and how deaths are reported all vary by state. This tracker maps that, one state at a time, and it is honest about what is still being verified.

// The national picture

No national standard, uneven state oversight

County jails are governed at the state level, and the range is wide. Some states run a dedicated jail-standards commission with unannounced inspections. Others inspect annually through the state corrections department. Some have little enforceable oversight at all. Accreditation through the American Correctional Association or NCCHC is voluntary, not a legal requirement. On deaths, the federal Death in Custody Reporting Act requires states that receive Byrne JAG funding to report deaths in custody to the U.S. Department of Justice, though independent reviews have found that reporting is incomplete.

// Methodology

How this is built

Each state is published only after its oversight authority is confirmed from the state body or a reputable source. We would rather leave a cell open than publish an unconfirmed claim. The tracker is expanded state by state and corrected as agencies and practitioners weigh in. It is a reference on oversight structure, not legal advice; confirm the current rule with your state authority.
// Common questions

Frequently asked

Is there a national standard for jail inspections?
No. There is no single national jail standard or inspection body. Standards and inspection authority are set state by state, and accreditation through bodies like ACA and NCCHC is voluntary.
How are in-custody deaths reported?
Under the federal Death in Custody Reporting Act (DCRA), states that receive Byrne JAG funding report deaths in custody to the U.S. Department of Justice. Independent assessments have found states underreport, so DCRA data is a floor, not a full count.
Is every state mapped?
Yes. All 50 states are mapped, each from the state authority or a reputable public report. Oversight structures change, so we review the tracker monthly and correct it as agencies and practitioners weigh in.
How can I correct or add a state?
Tell us. This tracker improves through practitioners and agencies who know their own state. Use the contact link and we will verify and update it.
