Editorial Standards and Review

IN SHORT

Every page in this library is held to the same standard: say only what is true, mark how it was reviewed, and never overclaim. This page explains the claims discipline we hold to, the three review tiers, and how the data is sourced. It is why the library can be trusted.

What we never say

The credibility of this library depends on restraint. Across every page:

  • No detection or accuracy percentages. We describe what a system does, not a number we cannot prove.
  • Never the word surveillance to describe the work. This is a safety layer with a person in the loop, not watching for its own sake.
  • A trained person reviews every alert. No system acts on a person on its own.
  • No facial recognition. Behavior and movement, not identities.
  • We say a system supports documentation, review, and a reviewable record. We do not claim it meets a legal or accreditation bar, proves a case, or guarantees an outcome.
// The three review tiers

How each page is checked

Not every page needs the same review. Each carries a tier so you know how it was checked:

  • VPT Editorial Review. Written and checked by VPT for accuracy, clarity, and claims discipline. Most reference, comparison, and guide pages.
  • Corrections Practitioner Reviewed. Reviewed for operational accuracy by Michael Ranes, Chief Corrections Strategy and Standards Officer, a career corrections leader. The doctrine and risk pages.
  • Legal or compliance sensitive, guidance only. Pages touching law, funding, or standards are kept deliberately conservative and carry a stronger not-advice notice.
// Sourcing

Honesty over completeness

The living trackers are sourced from state authorities and reputable records, and we mark a cell verification in progress rather than publish a guess. We would rather show a gap than a claim we cannot stand behind. Every page also carries a standing notice that it is educational information, not legal, medical, or compliance advice.

// Living and maintained

Not a static site

The library is updated on a monthly rhythm, and additions are logged in the changelog. A maintained reference is more trustworthy than one frozen in time, and it is how we keep the trackers and legislation watch current.

// Clearing up the confusion

What it is not

  • Not legal or medical advice. It is operational and educational information; follow your facility's policy and your own advisors.
  • Not certification. Nothing here confirms compliance with any law, standard, or accrediting body.
  • Not a substitute for facility policy. It informs decisions; it does not replace your procedures.
SEE IT IN PRACTICE

These standards are applied across every page. Start at the Library, or see what has changed recently.

// Common questions

Frequently asked

Who writes and reviews the library?
VPT writes and edits it under the claims discipline described here. Doctrine and risk pages are additionally reviewed for operational accuracy by Michael Ranes, VPT's Chief Corrections Strategy and Standards Officer.
Why avoid accuracy percentages and legalistic promises?
Because they overclaim. We describe what a system does and keep an honest, reviewable record, rather than promise outcomes or legal standing we cannot guarantee.
How current is the library?
It is maintained monthly, and additions are logged in the changelog. The living trackers are updated as new sources and measures are confirmed.
Is any of this legal advice?
No. It is educational information for corrections professionals. Confirm anything legal, medical, or compliance-related with your own advisors and your state authority.
